Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cognitive Legal Support?

Cognitive Legal Support (CLS) is a temporary legal staffing company.

What legal support services does CLS provide?

Highly educated, well-trained, qualified, experienced and licensed U.S. and Canadian freelance lawyers you need to supplement your professional staff as part-time, temporary contract associates to step in to perform a variety of legal assignments and tasks. Whether you are undecided whether to hire a full-time associate or your firm needs immediate assistance, CLS has a strong and deep bench of qualified lawyers to support and scale your law practice - as needed and just in time - while we handle all HR functions and overhead.

How does my law firm benefit?

Lawyers and law firms face increasing cost and resourcing pressures in this economic environment. CLS has freelance lawyers available to work on a flex-time basis, as workload dictates. The proven experience and expertise of our lawyers mean they can work remotely and still be closely integrated with you and your permanent staff. We also price our services so that law firms can protect their margins on projects and matters based on reliable budget guidelines.

What is the relationship among the CLS freelance lawyer, CLS and my law firm?

Our professional staff of lawyers contracts with CLS as non-exclusive, part-time/flex-time CLS employees. You contract with CLS to provide these lawyers to perform your law firm’s assignments and tasks at the beginning of each assignment. Neither CLS nor its assigned lawyer(s) will provide legal advice or representation to your law firm or your client, but instead will be acting as highly trained temporary paralegals, law clerks or associates, working under your direct instruction and supervision. Their work product will at all times be subject to your review, approval, and acceptance.

How are your fees structured?

Our prices are flexible depending on the task and level of expertise you require, and your projected budget. We work based on hourly as well as per-project, flat fee rates, and will adhere to your agreed budget. Think between $40 to $150/hour.

Who are your lawyers?

Every one of our staff lawyers is duly licensed and in good standing in the U.S. or Canada. Our staff is rigorously vetted. We’ll give you their resumés and professional references on request, and a full opportunity to interview them by phone or Skype before you accept them to be assigned to your matter.

Which practice areas do you support?

While the bread and butter of temporary legal staffing involves legal research and writing, pleadings, motion practice, appellate procedure, and document/contract drafting, review, digesting and coding, our subject matter experts fill a broad spectrum of practice areas. You can see the full list here.

Is there a temp-to-perm option?

If your temporary needs may become permanent, you are welcome to offer the job to your assigned lawyer through us. You will incur a reasonable and highly competitive recruitment fee, quoted in advance.

What is your policy regarding confidentiality and conflicts of interest?

At the inception of each assignment, CLS will simultaneously execute a strict confidentiality agreement and will conduct an immediate conflict of interest search. If no conflicts are discovered and the assignment is agreed upon, each CLS lawyer accepted by you to work on the assignment will execute a similar confidentiality agreement which will apply in accordance with their standard professional obligations.

CLS also requires its panel lawyers to conform to strict non-solicitation obligations relating to any contacts which they make while on assignment to a CLS client/end user. We also encourage you to propose your own confidentiality agreement to CLS and the CLS lawyer assigned to do your work.

CLS strictly requires all CLS panel lawyers to continuously check for, certify the absence of, and monitor any potential conflicts which may arise relating to professional work which they have previously carried out.
